1786 – Finances in France are more than unstable.
May 5, 1789 – Meeting at Versailles held to approve new tax on nobility.
June 17, 1789 – National Assembly is established, ending absolute monarchy, beginning representative government.
June 20, 1789 – Tennis Court Oath
July 14, 1789 – Attack on Bastille. Establishes Bastille Day.
1789 – Great Fear sweeps France.
October 1789 – Parisian women storm Versailles. Louis and Marie Antoinette left france, ending the Great Fear.
August 5, 1789 – End of Old Regime.
August 25, 1789 – National Assembly declares church officials to be elected and paid as state officials, angering peasants across France.
September 1791 – National Assembly completes new jconstitution establishing limitited constitutional monarchy, creating legislative monarchy.
April 1792 – Legislative Assembly declares war.
September 21, 1792 New governing body: National Convention is established.
January 21, 1793 – King Louis XVI beheaded by the guillotine.
February 1793 – The Convention orders a draft of 300,000 French citizens.
July 1793-1794 – Robespierre rules France almost as a dictator. “Reign of Terror” insues.
July 28, 1794 – Robespierre is sentenced to death by guillotine. End of Reign of Terror and radical phase of the French Revolution.
1795 – National Convention drafts new plan of constitution.

1806 – Napoleon establishes Continental system to make Europe more self-sufficient.
1808 – Napoleon sends an invasion force through Spain and angers the spanish people.
1812 – War of 1812. Late 1812 – Britain, Russia, Prussia, Sweden, and Austria join fores against the weakened French army.
1814- Peninsular War weakens French Empire.
April 1814 – Napoleon gives up his throne.
March 1, 1815 – Napoleon escapes Alba and becomes emperor of France again.
June 18, 1815 – Waterloo. Napoleon attacks the British army.
June 20, 1815 – Napoleon’s troops give up.
1821 – Napoleon dies.
